Discipline
- How To Develop Your Self Discipline And Willpower
Discipline is consciously taking
the time to practice an activity. This is to
continually undertake the activity you feel drawn to do over a
sustained period of time.
Most people typically lack the willpower to
achieve a sense of self discipline in an area they want to achieve
results in.
There are a number of common reasons for this lack of self discipline,
however the most common reason is not spending the time actively doing
the task they want to achieve.
For example each day I am feeling drawn to sit down at my laptop and
write these pages for the website you are on right now.

| Discipline
- do what your heart is wanting you to do |
However if
I didn't actually sit down at my computer and spend time writing these
posts then you wouldn't be reading the words you are reading right now.
That is why
I feel that self discipline is just a matter of spending time actually
doing the task it is that you feel drawn to do. Without spending the
time on the task you are drawn to then nothing gets done.
So how do
you discipline yourself to actually do what it is you want to do?
 |
| Discipline
- spend time doing what your soul wants you to do |
Well
the first step is to find what it is you are on the planet to do.
For
example, there is no point disciplining yourself to do something if
it's not in alignment with what you are on the planet to do. We only
have so much time and energy available in a given day and only so much
time and energy in our life on this planet earth. Therefore it is
important to firstly find what it is you are on the planet to do.
Personally
I find spending time alone in nature for 3-4 days on a 'nature
immersion' gives most people the time, space and clarity to find what
it is their soul came here to learn in this lifetime.
Then
once you have found what it is you are here to do then it is just a
matter of disciplining yourself to actually do it. A guy at a healing
festival once said to me 'Find your modality and then like Nike say...
just do it!'
However
I find a lot of people also get stuck in the 'just do it' part.
Now
once you have found what it is your soul is here on the planet to do,
the next step is to align the actions you take in the external world
with your inner world. That is what alignment means.
For
example after many 3-4 day nature immersions it is clear to me that my
soul is here to connect people to 'source' through nature. Then I
started to ask the question 'How do I connect people to source through
nature?' One of the things which came was to create a website that
showed people how to connect with source through nature.
However
obviously I needed to not only create this website but also write a lot
of articles so that more people would be able to read about connecting
to the wisdom of nature. So right now I am disciplining myself to wake
up before dawn each morning and write 1,000 words or so in order to
align with what my soul is here on the planet to do.
When
you are in alignment with what you are on the planet to do then it
becomes a lot easier to complete the tasks you feel drawn to do. For
example I used to have a professional career in a busy city and would
get dressed up in a shirt and tie each morning. It was a real struggle
to go each morning, however now it's like I can't wait to wake up in
the morning because I want to spend time writing these words.
The
point here is to start aligning the actions you take in the world with
the inner pull of your heart. Then it is just a matter of spending the
time actually doing what it is you are here to do in order to. For
example I now have thousands of people each month from around the world
come to this website. At last count people from over 134 countries
around the planet have read these words 'source' is guiding me to write.
Now
in order to actually do what it is you are on the planet to do you will
need to spend time actually doing tasks and continually putting energy
into these tasks over a sustained period of time. This is the
definition of self discipline.
If
I feel a lack of motivation then one little trick I use to motivate
myself to do the tasks is to set an alarm on my mobile phone that is
set to go off in 50 minutes. I will use this 50 minutes to fully devote
myself to undertake a task that is in alignment with what I am on the
planet to do.
Studies
have found that concentrating and focusing on a task for 50 minutes is
the most efficient amount of time to achieve results. Any longer than
50 minutes and people's efficiency starts to decrease and any shorter
than 50 minutes people still have time to fully focus on the task at
hand.
Therefore
if you are wanting to discipline yourself to undertake an activity then
I suggest setting aside just 50 minutes to fully focus on the task at
hand. Studies have also found that having a 10 minute break where you
do absolutely nothing allows your brain the rest it need to then focus
again. So the routine if you want to get a lot of tasks done is to
focus for 50 minutes, have a break for 10 minutes and then focus again
for 50 minutes.
Then
it is just a matter of willpower to actually do this on a daily basis.
Willpower
is just
a matter of following what it is your heart is guiding you to do. I
cover more about listening to the pull within your heart in my book
'The Heart Walk', however when you align with the pull within your
heart then you will naturally do what it is you are on the planet to do.
When
you are doing what you are on the planet to do then you don't need to
discipline yourself to untertake the tasks. The reason for this is
because you are in alignment with your soul's purpose for being on the
planet and the pull is to naturally undertake those tasks.
