- How To Find A Mentor
A mentor is someone who gives
trusted advice in order to help guide you through life. Your mentor is usually a person
who you trust and is able to impart their wisdom to you through regular
contact.
There are a number of ways to find a mentor. The
main
way people find a mentor is through professional associations or word
of mouth. The important point however is to find a mentor that you
know, like and trust.
The role of the mentor is to guide the mentee through a number of
challenges and problems that they face throughout their life.

- find a mentor who you resonate with that imparts wisdom |
This role
of the mentor has been in place for thousands of years across a number
of indigenous cultures.
For
example, in a number of cultures in Africa and Asia people in the tribe
would consult the 'medicine man' or shaman for direction and advice.
The
shaman would then often take on the role of being a mentor to the
people who came to him and would often give them advice and wisdom from
the spiritual world beyond the one in which they lived.

- a mentor gives you guidance and direction |
The
shaman would often perform ceremonies in order to tap into the
spiritual dimension through nature and then bring that wisdom
back to either the person consulting them or to the tribe when it was
needing direction.
In
today's modern society the role of the shaman and medicine man has now
fallen onto the shoulders of the mentor. However without the right
training the mentor may find it difficult to give the advice that will
make a difference to his or her mentee.
It
is this lack of clarity that can reduce the effectiveness of a
mentoring role.
However
in indigenous cultures members of the tribe would not only consult the
shaman of the tribe but would also actively consult nature for wisdom
and guidance.
Largely
we have forgotten how to tap into the wisdom of nature however it's
guidance is always there just waiting to be tapped into again. There
are a number of ways to tap into the wisdom of nature.
The
first is to realize that everything within nature is connected and has
an intelligence. Once you are open to this intelligence then it is
willing to share it's wisdom and guidance with you.
Then
it is a matter of spending time within nature and deepening your
connection with the land. In order to deepen your connection with the
land you need to spend time being with the land. By being with the land
I don't mean being with your thoughts, I mean being with the land on
the land.
For
example, we all have a little voice within our minds that continually
talks to us and engages a lot of our attention and awareness. However
when you actively turn this voice within your mind off then it gives
you the time and space to be with what you are being with.
If
you are wanting to tap into the wisdom of an old tree then you can
instead be with the tree and listen to it's wisdom, much as you would
listen to the wisdom of your mentor in modern society. However I find
the wisdom contained within nature tends to be a lot more powerful and
insightful because it taps directly into 'source' in order to guide you.
When
you are 'with' nature, the idea is to communicate directly with it's
wisdom. This is mainly done through asking questions to nature and
listening to what it has to say.
For
example,
you may be having difficulties with your career and be looking for
direction. You can then enter into nature, form the connection and then
ask questions of nature such as 'What should I do here?', 'What
direction should I take?' or perhaps 'What do you want me to do?'
Then
the idea is to just listen to the messages nature is giving you. I
cover this more in my book 'The Heart Walk', however when you are
listening to the wisdom contained within nature the idea is to listen
with your inner ears. The messages you receive are usually not heard as
in the audible sense but you will hear the messages with your inner
hearing.
The
other way nature talks to you is through the symbols that she shows you
around the question and intention that you set. Then is it just a
matter of interpreting the symbols that she is showing you, such as a
rainbow or a fish jumping out of the water in front of you.
When
you are interpreting these symbols from nature then it is usually the
first thing that comes to you. Do not second guess the first meaning
you give to a symbol because it is this first impression that is
usually the true interpretation of the message contained within nature.
As
you spend more and more time
tapping into the wisdom of nature you will start to deepen your
connection with her symbols and messages. Personally I now see nature
as being a close mentor because she is continually guiding me through
life when I take the time to be with her.
