Nature Quest
A nature quest is simply
another name
for the vision quest.
Traditionally the vision quest refers to
what is formally known as the 'Native American Vision Quest'. However
some facilitators prefer to use the term 'nature quest' instead of
'vision quest' to distinguish the difference between a 'Native American
Vision Quest' and the process being used.
Typically the Native American vision
quest follows ceremonies that are passed down from generation to
generation. Personally I use the term 'vision quest' for the solo
nature quests I facilitate because it is the term most people
understand.

However I feel it is important to
distinguish that I do not facilitate 'Native American' vision quests in
the traditional sense of the word.
The reason for that is that I have not grown up in American and here in
Australia I have not been exposed to many native american indians to
gain an in-depth understanding of their culture.
Personally
I have experimented with a
number of the ceremonies that native americans use for their
traditional vision quests however I have had mixed results with them.
For example I have tried fasting whilst
out on my own vision quests but personally I found that to be more
distracting
than beneficial because I was constantly thinking about my hunger as
opposed to picking up the subtle signs from spirit and nature. That's
not to say fasting is ineffective, however in my experience it became
quite a distraction.
Likewise
with creating a traditional medicine wheel for your 'power spot'.
Personally I found it another distraction to place so much importance
on having the ceremony. For example, gathering stones for the N-S-E-W
directions, entering from a certain direction, smudging to purify the
space, not leaving the circle except for special occasions etc. Again,
that is not to say the medicine wheel does not have merit but in my
experience it distracted from hearing the subtle messages from nature
and spirit.
With
a nature quest the idea is to again set out with an intention for your
quest, find a spot in nature you feel drawn to and listen to and
interpret the signs from nature and spirit and relate them to the area
of life you are looking at.
Then
the real power will come in the re-integration phase of your nature
quest. That is when you develop a step-by-step plan to bring the
insights you gained into action steps in order to transition from one
phase of your life to another.
