The
vision
quest process essentially involves spending time alone in nature.
It is alone in nature without the distractions of modern
civilization that we are able to communicate directly with
'spirit'. This has been done for thousands of years across
nearly every indigenous culture throughout history.
What happens on a vision quest is that you first set an intention for
doing a vision quest. This could be to gain clarity around a
relationship. Or a health issue. Your life purpose. Or even just to
connect more deeply with nature.

Having a clear intention starts to shift the forces involved and aligns
the messages that you receive from spirit and nature.
Once you have decided on your intention for doing the vision quest, the
next step is to find a spot in nature where you can be alone for 3-4
days. I've found the actual time period is not of critical importance.
It's more about creating the space for you to receive messages and
guidance from nature and spirit.
For example, when I go on a vision quest I usually check in with my
inner dialogue and listen to what is most important for my life at that
point in time. It could be an avenue of direction in an area of my
life, to gain clarity around a problem I am facing or even just to
connect more deeply with the guidance of spirit.
From there I also check in to see what part of nature is calling me.
For example if I am looking for vision I find I am usually drawn to
mountain-tops. This is probably because I can see a lot from the top of
a mountain. However if I am looking for inner nurture I am usually
drawn to thick forested areas. This is probably because of the
nurturing and closeness I feel from thick forests.
Your
focused intention will direct what you see in your vision quest...

However the point here is that after you have set your intention you
should then take the time to check in to see where you are being drawn
to in nature.
After you have set your intention for the vision quest and settled on a
place in nature to do your vision quest, the next part of the process
is to go to the place you feel drawn to and spend 3-4 days there alone
by yourself without distractions. A lot of things happen during this
time but the common
theme I find with most people is that the 'voice' within their minds
starts to get turned down and the 'voice' within their hearts begins to
get turned up.
Going on a vision quest allows you to get back into alignment with your
true nature. And this is usually found alone in nature without the
distractions of everyday life.
I also find a lot of people start to receive direct messages from
nature and spirit around their intention for going on the vision quest.
For example if they start to notice the scurrying of ants through a
forest they may relate this to how they are currently living their
life. Or if they notice an eagle soaring above they may interpret that
as needing more ease and grace in their current situation.
The interpretation of such signs from nature and spirit are unique to
the individual and personally I find general interpretations of such
signs are not as effective as the meaning individuals give to them.
This stage of being 'at one' with nature is a powerful, powerful period
during the vision quest process. It is when the greatest insights into
problems and issues arise. These insights come from beyond the rational
and seemingly come directly from 'spirit'. Most often they occur
spontaneously and directly from spirit.
Spirit is simply the force that guides life. We each have our own true
nature. And alone for several days without distractions we access our
true nature in nature. I call this 'alignment'. And we get to see what
is the right course of action to naturally take regarding the intention
we have set.
After this phase of communicating directly with spirit, nature and our
true nature the next phase of the vision quest is to integrate the
insights you receive. It is great to receive the insights but the whole
point of the vision quest process is to align your life with what you
are meant to be doing in this lifetime.
The integration phase is about developing a step-by-step plan of action
to take when you return to your normal life after your vision quest. If
you have received major insights that require an almost 180 degree
shift in the way you are operating then this phase can be quite
challenging.
For example I used to work as an Engineer but it was crystal clear on a
vision quest I went on in the mountains of France this was like being a
square peg in a round hole and was out of alignment with what I was
meant to be doing. It was also clear this nature-based spirituality
work was the path I was meant to be walking in this life-time.
The insight came quite suddenly however the challenge came from walking
two paths at the same time until I brought my external life into
alignment with the internal vision. It is this integration phase of the
vision quest that can be the most challenging.
Most people choose to do a vision quest at a transition period in their
life. The transition differs for just about everyone however the most
common themes I come across are relationship issues, life purpose and
direction, health concerns and simply connecting at a deeper level with
nature.
